Dr. Thomas Tayeri, MD, is the co-founder of the Fiat Lux Foundation and a pivotal force in bringing Transcend Eye Hospital to life, alongside Hon. Wesley Korir. A globally renowned ophthalmologist, Dr. Tayeri graduated from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) medical school in 1990 and completed his training at Stanford University. Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmologists, he has led numerous surgical expeditions across Asia and Africa, training local surgeons and restoring sight through his work with Surgical Eye Expeditions International. His vision for Transcend—a premier, locally operated eye hospital in Kenya—reflects his decades of expertise and commitment to eradicating curable blindness. Dr. Tayeri’s leadership ensures that Transcend delivers outcomes comparable to first-world standards, making it a transformative gift to Cherangany.

Wesley Kipchumba Korir, a former Member of Parliament for Cherangany (2013–2017) and a celebrated marathon champion, co-founded Transcend Eye Hospital alongside Dr. Thomas Tayeri, with the vital support of the Fiat Lux Foundation. Driven by a deep passion for his community and guided by Psalm 146:8, “The Lord gives sight to the blind; the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down,” Korir envisioned a facility where quality eye care would be accessible to all. His dedication to Cherangany’s well-being, paired with his leadership, has been instrumental in establishing Transcend as a cornerstone of health and hope.
The Fiat Lux Foundation is the proud sponsor of Transcend Eye Hospital, providing the critical funding and vision that made this state-of-the-art facility possible. Founded in 2010 by Dr. Thomas Tayeri, Fiat Lux is dedicated to preventing and reversing blindness in the developing world by partnering with local ophthalmologists to build sustainable eye care centers. Their guiding principles—sustainability, local control, quality care, and accessibility—shape Transcend’s operations.
